The Carbon School District has been hosting a Summer Lunch Program and it will be ending on July 29. Castle Country Radio was able to sit down with Director, Tonya Jones to discuss the summer lunch program and about the upcoming school year.
“Free lunch and free breakfast and it is at all the elementaries so we encourage you to take your kids out, go get breakfast, go get lunch and enjoy sitting there and visiting with your children as they eat. Breakfast is 7:45 am to 8:30 am and then lunch is from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm,” explained Jones. Children and families are encouraged to arrive early to the sites due to the fact that meals are served for a set amount of time
“We have different things for breakfast but we serve a lot of French Toast, a lot of waffles, scrambled eggs, those kinds of things for breakfast. For lunch we serve pizza, just about every day, and then we just have a few different entrees like we’ll serve Orange Chicken on a different day, chicken nuggets, mini tacos, some of those things just you know that are pretty easy for the kids to eat, especially for the younger ones,” stated Jones. Anyone and everyone ages 18 and under can eat for free and guests do not have to be from our county to benefit from this program.
The summer lunch program ends on Friday, July 29, but for the lunch program director its time to start thinking about the upcoming school year. Parents of school aged children should be receiving a packet from the school district regarding the free/reduced lunches and instructions on how to apply. “The first thing we need to do is have them apply to the Family Titank. So it’s called https://family.titank12.com/ that’s where you will apply and create your account. Once you’ve created an account, then you need to verify your email and then you’re able to go in after that and apply for free/reduced lunch. We encourage everyone to go in and apply because it benefits all the schools,” said Jones. Statics pulled from approved applications are used to apply for funding for Title 1, CSD Grants, various programs, community grants and organizations around Carbon County.
The price for school lunch has increased a bit this year as Jones explains, “They have gone up just a little bit. So like the elementary breakfast is a $1.50 and we will be charging for breakfast. We wish we didn’t have to but the state is not giving us that free waiver so we do have to charge for breakfast. So elementary for breakfast is a $1.50, middle school is a $1.75, high school is $2.00 and that’s all for breakfast. So for lunch we have elementary is at $2.00, middle school is $2.25 and lunch is $2.50 at the high school. So we tried to keep is as low as we can,” stated Jones.
