The Emery Spartan football squad will be getting back to it with their first game scheduled for August 12 in Nephi against Juab, and wind all the way until October 12 when they end the season on the road at Summit Academy. The Spartans ended their 2021 campaign 5-6 on the season and 3-2 in region play.
The non-region portion of the schedule will see the Spartans face Juab, who lost in the playoffs last year to eventual runner-up Morgan. Juab also entered last years playoffs as the No.1 seed in 3A. North Sanpete, Union and the rivalry match-up with Carbon on September 9 will round out the non-region schedule.
The Spartans have already had a busy July with heat acclimation camp and taking part in a football clinic for youth with Super Bowl Champion Matt Gay. The JV team traveled to Payson for a 7-on-7 tournament taking first place in their division as well. The camp for the Spartans will begin on the 12th.
Coach Jon Faimalo was a guest recently on KOAL’s Drive Time Sports where he talked about the make-up of this year’s team.
“Yeah, I mean I think we lost a lot last year we had a really good senior class. My senior class this year, Koalton Curtis is a kid that played a lot on kicks, was on the field on both sides of the ball a little bit. Matt Olsen, was a kid that bounced in-and-out, and he’ll just be a junior. Treg Miller, he started on both sides of the ball for us last year. Wade Stilson, is our quarterback right now, played JV and a little bit of spot minutes on varsity last year, so we have kids with experience. We’re trying to find some linemen, that’s where we really took a hit. Kelby Jones, played the defensive line a lot and helped out on the offense and Bowen Sitterud, but there’s a lot of opportunity for these kids to play and step in to some big shoes to fill.”
