Active Re-Entry offers many programs for individuals with disabilities and that includes a Care Giver Support Group. Castle Country Radio was able to sit down with two coordinators, Richard and Georgina to discuss the details of the group.

“Originally, the Care Giver Support Group was the Alzheimer’s Support Group, ok. Because it was derived from a lady who had Alzheimer’s, that kind of went hand-in-hand with the Perky Van also. But since that inception of that we’ve found out that there were a lot of other needs in the community. We’ve had various caregivers of people who have disabled children, whose mother or dad has passed away, who are suffering from some type of dementia, so lots of different things for caregiving has evolved from that initial one that we’ve had,” stated Richard. A family member’s health condition can demand a lot from family members so to have a place to receive support is really important.

“One of the things that often happens if you are in a caregiving position, you give so much of yourself that you end up getting ill or going down first, rather than the person you’re doing the caregiving for. So we’re there to try and help the caregiver focus also on themselves and their needs, and get the support that they need so that they can do a better job,” said Georgina. Having an outlet to receive support helps reduce anxiety and fatigue by allowing caregivers and opportunity to openly discuss the challenges they are facing.

Monthly meetings are offered to assist and support family members or others who are caring for individuals with disabilities. Meetings are held on the 4th Wednesday of the month. Other support groups offered at Active Re-Entry are Grief Support Group, Active Access Support Group, and Low Vision Support Group.
