Each week during the school year a representative from the Carbon County School District comes in to speak with Castle Country Radio about the latest news and happenings taking place within the district. Now that the summer is winding down it is time to present the weekly series again and it’s only appropriate that the first weekly update of the school year be with Superintendent Mika Salas.
“We’re so excited to have them back. Kids just bring an energy and happiness to a building that we just can’t get any other way. I miss that energy every day, actually, in this position because it’s not part of my day anymore, and I miss it. We are so excited to have them back. Of course, there are so many things already in place, already going, all of our Fall sports have been going, they’re going. There’s even a lot of competition before school starts, so that’s in full swing,” said Principal Salas. Just recently a meeting was held with all the district principals to discuss their welcome back to school plans and they each have some great activities planned as students arrive for their first day of school which is August 17.
If parents have not already registered their students for school, they need to do so by calling the school. An important part of registering is to apply for free/reduced school lunches. “The past two years for COVID we had 100 percent free lunch at all of our schools and it was subsidized through federal funds but that is not the case anymore. So I encourage any parent who even thinks they might qualify for free/reduced lunch please visit any of the websites, either our district website or any of the schools websites, and if you just kind of just scroll down, not even a half-page, you’ll see a link for school meals update and we encourage you to apply, even if you think you might not qualify, please apply,” explained Principal Salas. Although, one may be denied free/reduced lunch, the number of applications could help the school receive future federal funding.
There are a few construction projects that are finishing up right now as Salas explains, “Carbon High is wrapping up, we are on our last Punch List items that we’re going through from our bond and our big remodel at Carbon High. It’s pretty much reaching the end of that and we’re very proud of the building that we have right now, its just fantastic. Then Helper Middle School of course we are finishing the work to tie together the old building with the new. We did move the kids into the new part the end of last year, I think people thought that it meant that we were finished, but we are far from finished. We have a lot still to do and there is some exterior work that still needs to be done. But we plan right now to welcome the kids at Helper Middle School through the new front door.” Students and parents of Sally Mauro Elementary will notice that they have a new parking lot/bus area this year. Officials hope that this will make for a smooth first day of school.
