farmers-market

The Carbon & Emery Farmers Market kicked off mid-July but in the next few months they should have available more produce items for customers. USU Extension Assistant Professor, Steven Price was able to stop by Castle Country Radio to share all the details about this year’s market.

“This spring a lot of our annual crops were kind of setback, we’ve had some kind of weird disease issues this year, just kind of strange development in some of our fruit trees. So we’ve been set back a little bit but usually about this time of year is when we can start to rely on having produce there at the market,” said Price.  This weekend and moving forward folks should be able to see more produce available at the market.

The Farmers Market has moved to a new location and seems to be a better fit for vendors and consumers. “So we’ve moved to the parking lot of Sutherlands, we’re actually of the east side of the parking lot. So if you drive by there Saturday morning you’ll see all of the vendors set up,” explained Price. Sutherlands is located at 406 South Highway 55 in Price and the Farmers Market runs form 9:00 am to 12:00 pm on Saturdays.

Individuals that have SNAP Benefits are eligible to purchase items from the Farmers Market. “So SNAP is actually an acronym that stands for a Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. So it’s a benefit program through the state for qualifying individuals so we can actually accept that at the Farmers Market,” said Price. Officials are excited that they are able to offer fresh, nutritious foods to consumers that are recipients of this benefit program.

There is also a great benefit for seniors in the area as Price explains, “So any seniors that either have SNAP or the new Commodity Supplemental Food Program, of which some of our seniors in the county already have their cards that came in the mail. We can give you a $50.00 booklet in vouchers and that can be used for fresh produce, herbs and honey.” If seniors do not have the SNAP or Commodity Supplemental Food Program they could still be eligible for the voucher if they meet the income qualifications.

The Farmers Market will run till September 24. If you would like more information on the Carbon & Emery Farmers Market visit their Facebook page.
