Dylan Curtis, senior kicker for the Carbon Dinos, stepped up in the biggest moment of the game and gave the Dinos a 3-0 win over the Hillcrest Huskies to start the 2022 season.

Curtis nailed the 25-yard field goal through the uprights as time expired to provide the lone score of the game for either team.

Just a few plays before, to start the game-winning drive, Mason Vasquez drew a defensive hold on third down to continue the Dinos drive that began with just over a minute and a half left in the game.

Two plays later, senior Trever Worley broke a 25-yard run that set Curtis up for a game winning 40-yard field goal with 11 seconds left. As Curtis attempted to the kick, he was met by a flood of Huskies that resulted in a roughing the kicker penalty and gave the Dinos one last play to end the game. And Carbon won the game in walk-off fashion.

The Dinos had opportunities, throughout the game, to put points on the board, but repeatedly failed to execute in third and fourth down situations. Thanks to the stellar play of the Carbon defense, led by seniors Chanse Pendergrass and Bradley Wood, Hillcrest was held scoreless until the final whistle blew.

The Huskies had chances of their own to capture a lead and failed to capitalize on Dinos mistakes. Most notably, with 5 minutes left in the game, Dino quarterback Wyatt Falk was hit as he threw, and the ball landed in the arms of a Hillcrest defender. The Husky player returned the ball 34 yards before fumbling the ball through the back of the endzone, resulting in a touchback for Carbon.

Offensively, Ashton Ferguson carried most of the load for Carbon as he pulled off multiple clutch plays that extended offensive drives.

Next week, the Carbon Dinos will return home for their season opener against the Grand Red Devils. Grand opened their season with a 50-0 win over Water Canyon. Kick-off is set for 7:00 pm and the pregame show will start at 6:30, live on KRPX 95.3 The Peak.
