It’s the end of August, and to the Lady Dino volleyball team that means it’s time for their annual trip to the Dixie High School Fly High Tournament. The Dinos still have a couple of weeks before they will start region play, and the Fly High is always a good gauge as to where the Dinos sit this season.Last year Carbon was undefeated during the trip down south, this year however they came back with a 2-2 record moving them to 4-3 overall.
The Dinos have jumped out with back-to-back wins over Juab and Duchesne, and then a loss to Union.
In St. George, Carbon started out with the Monticello Buckaroo, a school from the 1A ranks. The Dinos made quick work of the Buckaroo in straight sets 21-19 and 25-17.
Next up was the team from Kanab from 2A. The Cowboys were the runner-up in last years state championships. This time around the Dinos were handed a straight set loss 25-19 and 25-17.
The Dinos ended pool play on Friday night taking on Panguitch, another 1A team. The Bobcats are the runner-up from the 1A state championships last season. And while Carbon kept it close in the second set, Panguitch still claimed the 25-18, 25-23 win.
In the final game of the weekend the Lady Dinos faced a familiar foe, the Emery Spartans. Emery had begun pool play in the same grouping with Payson, Valley and the host team Dixie.
Emery kept the first and third sets close falling to the same 25-23 score in both, in the second set the Dinos gave themselves a little breathing room 25-14.
Carbon will slow down it’s schedule with just a pair of games in the next couple weeks. they will face North Summit this week and North Sanpete next week, both contest will be on the road, in fact their next four will be away from Carbon High for the next four contests.
The Dinos won’t be home again until Sept. 20 when the Grand County Red Devils will come to town.
