Creekview Elementary was highlighted on this week’s Carbon School District weekly update so Principal Keith Palmer stopped by Castle Country Radio to discuss what’s been taking place at the school.
“Things have been going really well, it’s been busy and we’re trying some new things and that always takes time but we’re having a lot of fun. You mentioned a new program, we started on the first day of school with an assembly and we’re trying to sell to the kids about Images of Greatness. We’ve tried to show them some of those, especially locally grown people that have gone on to do things. We’re telling them about them but we’re also encouraging them to share with us when, you know, they discover other Images of Greatness or when they become that Image of Greatness is part of what we’re talking about with them. It’s been a lot of fun to see what they’re talking about and what they’re doing,” stated Principal Palmer. School officials have invited community members like a football coach, author of books and police officer to come in to the school and speak with the students about their professions and other important factors that have to do with each of them being Images of Greatness.
“What we followed up with is every staff member posts what we call their DNA, and what it stands for is Dreams, Need and Ability, and then we had every kid do the same thing. So afterwards we’re kind of capturing what their dreams are, what they need to do to achieve that dream, and some of the abilities that they already have. So we’re seeing a lot of interesting things that they are striving to become based on those conversations,” stated Principal Palmer. The school is hopeful that each student will be able to make a connection with a staff member by learning about each other’s DNA and in turn that makes for a great learning environment at school.
Another important characteristic the school is striving for students to learn and practice is respect. “It’s always been one of our five traits we target in our Positive Behavioral System but this year we decided to emphasize it a little more than the other four all year. We just noticed that its kind of becoming a bigger problem and that we were having most of our behavioral issues we could trace back to not showing respect. So we emphasize it all the time. We ask the teachers at least once a week to re-teach students what it means to be respectful. We’ve taken them around the school talk to them about respect in different areas,” said Principal Palmer. Students have really taken the concept of respect to heart and practicing it not only at school but at home too.
Parent/teacher conferences are coming up on September 21 and September 22. Parents can schedule their appointment online with each of the teachers and that information can be found on the school’s website. Any questions please contact the school at (435) 637-0828.
