
When the Spartans and Dinos meet, it makes no difference what the sport, it always makes for an interesting event. On Wednesday , the Lady Dino volleyball squad hosted Emery and once again, the Spartans got the better of the Dinos in straight sets.
This marked the third time that the two teams have met up this season with Carbon taking their first meeting at a tournament back in August, 3-0. When region play began, It was all Spartans, back on Sept. 27 in Castle Dale, the Spartans took a 3-1 victory. In the meeting on Wednesday, the Spartans got right to business in straight sets 25-18, 25-19 and 25-23.
Carbon sits at 15-9 overall and 4-3 in Region 12 play. The RPI, the ranking that will be used at the end of the regular season to determine seeding for the playoffs has been removed from view, and will not reappear until Wednesday when the bracket for the 3A State Championships will be revealed.
The Dinos have just one contest remaining against Richfield on Tuesday. Richfield is sitting at 17-8 and has a 5-1 region record. In the first meeting, it was a tightly contested match with Carbon taking the third and fourth sets 25-23 and 25-21, but the Wildcats came thundering back in the fifth and final set 15-7. This will be the second and final meeting between the two teams in the regular season.
Emery holds a record of 12-13 overall and 5-3 in region action. The top 11 teams in the RPI will get a first round bye and will automatically advance to the second round at UVU.
The Spartans have just one game left on their regular season slate as well, On Tuesday they travel to Moab to face the Grand County Red Devils. Grand is 6-10 this season and has yet to win a region contest. In the first meeting this season between the two, The Spartans got the straight set win.
The Utah High School Activities Association will release the final RPI rankings along with the bracket for the state championships on Wednesday, October 19, play will begin on Saturday the 22. First round play will take place at home sites and then in the second round the venue will move to Utah Valley University starting on October 28 and wrapping up the next day with the crowning of a new state champion.
The Carbon and Richfield game will take place on Tuesday with game time set for 6:30.
