- Carbon High School senior Bode Salas wrapped up his stellar high school golf career by winning a second 3A State Championship Thursday afternoon in Richfield at the Cove View Golf Course.
Entering the second and final day tied at the top of the leaderboard at one under par, Salas fired a solid 70 to finish three-under, leading to a two-stroke win over Richfield senior Keaton Anderson.
“In my opinion the Richfield course was playing extremely difficult down the stretch,” said Carbon head coach Robbie Etzel. “Bode just played fantastic down the stretch and made an absolute beautiful shot down the 18th green to seal the deal. It was just fantastic golf to watch.”
Clinging to a lead on the second day, Salas registered five straight pars heading into the final hole. A beautiful tee-shot put him on the green, where he sank a birdie putt to clinch his second state championship crown in three years.
The first-place performance from Salas helped catapult the Dinos from sixth place to third over the final 18 holes. Finishing the first day with a team score of 315, the Dinos shaved off 14 strokes in day-two, jumping Ogden, Morgan, and Grantsville.
Daron Garner’s two-day total of 156 placed him second on the team and 16th place overall. Kyler Clark was consistent throughout the tournament, shooting an 80 on Wednesday and a 78 on Thursday. Cole Callahan took the biggest leap, improving his second day total by 13 strokes as he registered a 70.
Thursday’s finale brings an end to an entertaining 2022 season for the Dinos. Finishing second overall in region to the eventual state champion Richfield Wildcats, Carbon continued to press for a region crown.
