The annual Veterans Day Ceremony will be held on Friday, Nov. 11 at 11:00 am at the Price City Peace Garden at 185 East Main Street. Commander David Jelin stopped by Castle Country Radio to share all the details.

The American Legion was formed after World War I to recognize Veterans who served. “One of the other things that happened after the great war was the creation of the Tomb of the Unknown Solider. About a year after the war ended a ship went across, the USS Olympia and it brought home the first of the Tomb of the Unknown. I get into the history on that, I’ve gone into it in previous ceremonies. But that also is on Nov. 11 that’s when that was officially recognized was Nov. 11. But the most important part about Nov. 11, the armistice took effect, the cessation of hostilities took effect took effect on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of that year and that’s how you get Veterans Day,” explained Commander Jelin. A brief history will be shared at the Veterans Day Ceremony that will be held on Friday, Nov. 11.

All Veterans, of all branches during all periods of conflict and in between, whether or not a member of a Veterans group is welcomed to attend the ceremony. “We’ll kick off the ceremony at 11:00 am. This year we’re not going to do a parade, last year there were fewer people interested or able and/or willing to walk. So we’re just going to kick off the ceremony, recognize the Veterans, go in to a little history, and present information about Veterans and come and learn,” said Commander Jelin. All Castle Country residents’ young and old are encouraged to attend this special ceremony to show all local Veterans that they are appreciated for their willingness to serve, as well as, to celebrate their bravery and sacrifices

There is now a Veterans Administration Clinic here in the area to help serve local Veterans. “They hired a nurse; he is here now. He’s first name is David, so he’s a local and he’s a Veteran and he’s been a nurse for some time. The VA is also looking at getting other staff here including clerical, and administrative, and assistants. Then they’re hiring doctors to oversee this clinic but they’ll be stationed in Orem and come down here periodically based on need,” said Commander Jelin. To make an appointment at the clinic, Veterans are to call the VA mainline in Salt Lake City to make an appointment.

For questions about the event or the VA Clinic can call the American Legion Post 3 at (435) 630-8474.
