Coming off a one point loss against Uintah on Thursday, the Lady Spartans basketball squad continued their weekend at the Shannon Johnson Cancer Classic in Vernal. On Friday they would face the team from Wasatch and were handed a 45-42 loss. On Saturday they met up with the Templars from Manti and earned a 57-38 victory.

The Lady Spartans are now sitting at 3-3 on the season and and have a long road ahead, as they will keep playing during their winter break.

In the game with the Wasatch Wasps, the Spartans would battle back-and-forth and kept this game close in the first half, going into the locker room down by three 20-17.  In the third, Emery came out the aggressors putting up 18 while the defense turned up it’s intensity, holding the Wasps to just 10 and the Lady Spartans taking a 35-30 lead into the fourth quarter.

In the fourth, Wasatch muscled their way back into the lead outscoring the Spartans 15-7 and taking the 45-42 win.

Aliya Lester led the Spartans with 23 in the contest. Alexis Mortensen added nine and Kenadie Maughan added five.

Emery would have to sleep fast because their next game was played at 10:30 on Saturday morning against the Manti Templars.

Emery was almost unstoppable in the first half holding the Templars to just 11 points while putting up 36 in quarters one and two. In the third things got a little closer as Emery allowed Manti to try and get back into the game giving up twelve in the third and then in the fourth giving up 15 while only putting four on the board, but by that time the lead and the victory was safe, and the Spartans would take the 57-38 win.

Lester once again led the way for the Spartans with 16 in the game. Brielle Rowley added 12 and Mortensen scored eight.

Next up for Emery they will head back to the Uintah Basin on Tuesday to take on the Union Cougars in Roosevelt.

Thursday night it will be back to the Spartan Center to face South Sevier. Game time is set for 7.
