Carbon High School was highlighted on this week’s Carbon School District weekly update so Student Government Advisor, Pam Erickson and Student Body President, Jared Saccomanno stopped by Castle Country Radio to discuss what’s been taking place at the school.
Right now, the student government is hosting their annual Carbon Christmas activities and events for the student body to participate in. “Carbon Christmas has been going on for several years. We try to raise funds to help families and students in our community with Christmas and maybe at other times throughout the year when there is a need. Like if they have a family disaster or something, we try to help them out a little bit. So we just try to raise money to buy some gifts for families in our community that are in need,” said Mrs. Erickson. The group recently held a Christmas Treasures Holiday Market which was held on Dec. 3 at the high school. There were over 60 vendors who participated which garnered funds for the Carbon Christmas project.
The students will host a wrapping store for community members to bring their Christmas gifts to get wrapped for a donation towards their work. “This Friday from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm we’ll be at Lin’s caroling and gift wrapping, and then again on Saturday from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm at Walmart, we’ll be caroling and gift wrapping,” said Saccomanno. The students will be doing the work of wrapping gifts on both days while entertaining shoppers with Christmas carols.
Another way the school is gathering funds for their cause is by hosting Penny Wars between classes. “So everyone has an advisory class at some point during their day and so for your advisory class for Penny Wars if you bring in pennies or bills into your own jar in your class, you get points towards the penny war. Then if you bring any silver change and put it in a different class’s jar they get points deducted. Then at the end of the week who every has the most points, get out 15 minutes early for lunch,” said Saccomanno. The student body felt that this was a great incentive for students to participate in the Penny Wars with their class.
