Each week during the school year a representative from the Carbon County School District comes in to speak with Castle Country Radio about the latest news and happenings taking place within the district. Superintendent Mika Salas stopped by Castle Country Radio to close out the year to discuss how things are going mid-year in the district and to recognize some un-sung heroes.

“District wide things are going great, I hate to say it, I don’t want to jinx anything but it feels normal. We’ve had two years of, well three years of not normal, and this really just feels normal. Its feel like everyone is just kind of back in a groove and it feels great when you walk into schools, its just really nice,” stated Superintendent Salas. It was the COVID pandemic that she was referring to as the not normal years with masks, remote learning and so it’s so nice to have students back in the schools.

There are many folks besides the faculty and administration that help run the schools and some of those individuals don’t get the recognition they should so the superintendent wanted to shine a light on a few departments within the district. “I would like to reach out and thank really our departments and their leaders. You know as I go to work every day and I go pretty early, I’m not nearly the first one at work every day. So our bus drivers get up really, really early to go get the busses ready, and get them warmed up for the kids, and start their routes, while most of us are still asleep. Justin Wilde is our new Transportation Director he has done a fantastic job so I just want to thank all those transportation employees,” stated Superintendent Salas. She also wanted to remind drivers to watch for children at the bus stops, especially during the winter months when its dark in the mornings.

“Then of course while they are driving the kids around, we have our cafeteria workers, bright and early or dark and early these days, at each school, getting the breakfast and lunch prepped and ready. Tonya Jones is our School Lunch Nutrition Director, and she’s done a fantastic job. Really no one thanks the lunch workers very often and so I just really want to say thank you for all the work that they do,” said Superintendent Salas. They’re love and dedication in guaranteeing kids are eating healthy is a big task on the daily.

The final shoutout was for the maintenance workers who help make sure buildings are up and running smoothly. “If we didn’t have buildings that were heated and well maintained it would be a huge problem. Our Maintenance Director is Jared Hansen and all of our guys that work in maintenance, I can not say enough about them. They’re on issues right away, they are so easy to work with, they are so great to be around, and we are very fortunate for everyone that works in our maintenance department,” said Superintendent Salsas. She finished by wishing all the students, faculty, administration, and departments a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
