The Carbon Dinos made the trip over Indian Canyon to Vernal on Thursday night to face the 5A Uintah Utes. The Dinos would battle in the first half but the third quarter once again would be their undoing as they fell to the Utes 60-43.
The first half seemed to be over in the blink of an eye as neither team would use a time out.
Uintah came out running, taking a 17-9 lead at the end of the first, flying up and down the floor fast break after fast break. In the second quarter, Carbon would match Uintah’s intensity on both ends of the floor battling back to cut the Utes’ lead to just two points, 29-22.
Uintah came out in the third in a trap defense and just kept pushing the subject, as they outscored Carbon 13-0 in the first five minutes of the quarter. Braxton Stevenson, scored two of his 17, as he took the lid of the basket on a drive from the right hand side. The Utes’ outscored the Dinos 16-5 in the third.
The Dinos continued to struggle in the fourth quarter as they had plenty of attempts at the basket, they just couldn’t get anything to fall, it was a more competitive quarter, and Carbon was able to find buckets but it was just too little too late and Carbon dropped their fifth straight 60-43.
Stevenson collected eight rebounds to go with his 17 points, he also went 6-of-7 from the free throw line. Cole Cripps added 10 with four boards and Zeke Wilson had nine to go with five rebounds. Ashton Ferguson only scored three points, but he made his presence felt with ten rebounds and four assists.
The Dinos are now off until January 4, when they host American Leadership Academy, for the first of their final two non-region games.
Tip-off is set for 7 p.m..
