The world bids a temporary farewell to a very special woman. Our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, adopted grandmother (to the neighbor kids), great-grandmother and dear friend, Carol Jean Cook, age 86, passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by family on December 19, 2022.
Carol was born on October 25, 1936, in Duchesne, Utah to Manfred Elisha and Lizzie LaPreal Ivie Campbell. She was the oldest of four: Rusty, her brother, and Laraine and Elaine, her two sisters.
Growing up, Carol played dodgeball, jacks, jump rope and read. She also enjoyed home economics where she learned to cook and sew. She really enjoyed sewing, a skill that she used throughout her life. Growing up, Carol was always the tallest and skinniest in her class.
Carol met her future husband Ron at the dances in the basement of the tabernacle in downtown Price, Utah after youth church activities. She was dating someone else at the time but later ended up writing to Ron while he was in the service. On January 14, 1956, she married Ronald Jess Cook in Price, Utah. During the early years of marriage Carol worked for the telephone company until the kids started coming.
Carol liked to fix things. She would say, “Fix it or get rid of it.” She also loved to paint, not pictures but walls or whatever needed a fresh coat. She also loved to whistle, if you wanted to know where she was just listen, and you could find her. But most of all she loved to read, from the scriptures to Mary Higgins Clark, she always had a book in her hand.
Carol also loved serving in her church. She served in many callings from primary teacher to Relief Society president and later served a mission with Ron in Cherry Hills, New Jersey. She later served in the Manti Temple as a temple worker. She loved to helping others throughout her life but later in life also learned how to let others serve her. Many of her neighbors became dear to her. Their service and kindness will never be forgotten by the family.
Carol and Ron never missed supporting their children’s and later, grandchildren’s sporting events. Many days were spent sitting on a bench cheering at the ball games. Although Carol didn’t play sports herself growing up, no one in Price has attended more games than she and Ron over the years.
Carol was a great listener and seemed to always give good advice. No matter who it was that needed someone to talk with she would make time and treat them with respect. She was self-reliant and had tremendous work ethic. So, she could also give tough, candid advice as well, if that is what was needed.
Ron and Carol had six children, Randy J. Cook, Renee Cook (deceased), Cherie Jean Jolly, Ricky Alan Cook, Roger Alan Cook and Curtis Raymond Cook; 25 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
She loved her grandkids and the kids from church, and they loved her. She would tell them that she loved them “2, 3 ,4” or “To the moon and back.” She always had time for them and made each of them feel loved and appreciated. She loved working on puzzles and playing cards.
Mother Teresa was asked, “How do you think you can change the world?” Her response was, “One person at a time.” Anyone who knows Carol knew she showed great love to everyone she met. She looked past other’s flaws to see the good in everyone. Although Carol never had a lot of money or fancy cars or went on exotic vacations, she truly lived a good life. A life worthy of emulation, a life that has enriched and blessed all who knew her. She will be missed.
