The USU Extension Emery County is gearing up for a new year of fun activities and events for 4-H. Castle Country Radio was able to sit down with 4-H Coordinator, Cassie Thatcher to get all the details.
Right now, the 4-H organization is trying to develop a Youth Council with students from grades sixth through twelfth. “So we are looking for any youth, grades sixth through twelfth, boys and girls, please come if you are interested in any leadership positions; being a part of a team, being able to go on trips and have fun, come and join us. We’ll have some things on social media – Facebook, and Instagram, please join us, we’ll be meeting monthly and we’re looking for anybody that wants to have fun with us,” said Thatcher. This is a great way to become involved in all aspects of the 4-H program as you will help develop courses to offer and gain leadership skills. For older students this experience would be ideal to list on college applications.
Many of the fifth-grade students will get a taste of what 4-H can offer during the month of January as Thatcher will be hosting some workshops at the schools. “So I See 4-H is a program the Utah Legislator has approved to help the fifth grade students learn more about Earth Science. So we focus on the four spheres – the geosphere, the hydrosphere, the biosphere, and the atmosphere. I’ll be coming into every fifth-grade classroom within the district and we do it’s 45 minutes to a one-hour program with the teachers and the students. It’s hands-on, big colored maps on the floor, everybody does hands-on activities learning about the different spheres and how they work with our world and everything,” explained Thatcher. She is looking forward to getting to know the students in a fun, educational, atmosphere.
If you have a hidden talent or a hobby that you would like to share with the 4-H program they are always looking for volunteers to help with courses and students. “We would love for anybody to be a volunteer, 18 years or older, please call the 4-H Office at (435) 381-3535 and Miss Alice will help you register as a volunteer or as a 4-H member,” said Thatcher.
