USU Extension is hosting an Active Parenting of Teens Workshop Series beginning on Jan. 23 at 6:00 pm at the USU Extension Classroom in the Carbon County Administration Building. This course is a great way to strengthen your relationship with your teen and will be offered not only in Carbon, but in Emery and Grand County too. Dr. Ashley Yaugher was able to speak over the telephone to share all the details with Castle Country Radio listeners.

“I think this is just a great class no matter what the time, no matter the area. Its Active Parenting of Teens and Families in Action. So it’s really just a great class for parents and guardians, as well as their teenagers in fifth to twelfth grade,” said Dr. Yaugher. This is a great way to develop a strong bond with your teens which is important for healthy parent/child relationships. Its evidence based that healthy relationships and open communication with your teen helps to decrease their chance of developing a substance and alcohol problem at a young age.

“These classes, there’s so much to learn, it’s a four-week series and so it will be two hours for four weeks and its going to be just a great time of bringing your youth and the parents go as well – parents and guardians. You learn how to break down those barriers of communication, cooperate more with our kids which can become more difficult as they age because they are becoming adults, then addressing challenges as they come up and learning how to do that. So I think it will be great topics,” said Dr. Yaugher.  I think as parents learning new ways to strengthen your relationship with your teens can always be helpful, as many parents are the most important influence on their child.

The Active Parenting of Teens Workshop Series will be offered as follows:

Carbon County        Jan. 23, 30 & Feb. 6, 13

Emery County         Feb. 6, 13, 21 & 27

There will be a dinner served on each night of the workshop so families will be able to enjoy a meal together while learning new skills, plus there will be swag given away. “You just have to register in advance on https://www.eventbrite.com/ and you can find all the links for our Carbon, Emery, and Grand County https://www.eventbrite.com/ on our Extension page, all in one place so we try to keep them updated and make sure that everything we are doing is there so its an easy place to find it.
