
Both the boys and the girls basketball teams for the Green River Pirates have three region contests under their belt. The season is coming down to the final handful of games and the Pirates are looking to add to the win column before the state tournament.
The Lady Pirates are 2-13 this season with a 1-2 region mark, and they hold the No. 18 in the 1A RPI, the RPI number will be updated throughout the season until tournament time when the final standings will be used for seeding. Since they returned from the holiday break they have gone 1-3 in their contests, with the win coming on Wednesday night against Monticello.
The first game after the break was against Rockwell, this was the third time the two programs faced off, in fact the last time was the game before the break with Rockwell taking the win in a close contest 53-50.
In the latest game, Green River was playing catch-up the whole time, finding themselves down 20-13 at halftime. In the second half the Pirates came out looking to get back into the game, making it interesting and out scoring Rockwell in the half by one, unfortunately they couldn’t cover the deficit from the first half and lost the game 48-42.
Abigail Erwin led the Lady Pirates with 23 and Jenilee Keener had 11.
Up next for Green River was their region opener on the road in Montezuma Creek to face Whitehorse. The Pirates had a rough outing against the Raiders falling 68-47.
The contest with Monument Valley was the second region match-up for Green River, and the offensive struggles continued putting up 31, while the Cougars dropped 68 on the Pirates.
Wednesday night, Green River found themselves back home after a three game road trip and getting home must have done the trick as the Pirates earned their first region win of the season taking a 63-44 victory , breaking a five game skid.
The Lady Pirates will be back on the road in Moab on Thursday night to face Grand. Wednesday they will travel to Price to take on region rival Pinnacle. They will be back home on Friday, January 20, to welcome in Caprock Academy from Grand Junction, Colorado.
Green River boys basketball has taken the court three times since returning from the break going 1-2 in the region contests. Sitting at 7-8 overall and 1-2 in Region 23 play, the Pirates sit at No.14 in the RPI.
First up for the boys was a road trip to face Whitehorse. The Pirates played the game very close in fact they would own a 21-18 lead at halftime but, by the time the third quarter ended Whitehorse had chipped away that lead to just one and continued it in to the fourth where when the buzzer sounded both teams were tied at 47. In the overtime period, Whitehorse outscored the Pirates by three and came away with the 57-54 victory.
Luis Hernandez led the way for the Pirates with 20 and Raul Mendoza scored 16.
Next up was a meeting with Monument Valley, this game was all Green River all the time and they truly led from beginning to end, the Pirates walked away with a 51-38 win.
Hernandez put up 15, with Bridjer Meadows and Joe Vollmer each adding nine.
On Wednesday night the long trip ended, when the Pirates played at home for the first time since November 19. Green River welcomed Monticello to town who got down to business as the Buckaroo took a 53-41 win.
Monticello jumped out as the aggressors early putting up 29 in the first half. The Pirates came out slow in the third quarter but found their scoring in the fourth putting up 19 in the quarter but the damage was already done and couldn’t come back.
Meadows put up 12 in the game with Hernandez adding six and Vollmer five in the loss.
The Pirates will be back on the road Wednesday to face Pinnacle in Price and then return home Friday night, January 20, when they will welcome Caprock Academy. Game time is set for 7.
