Amiah Timothy drained two huge three-point shots late in the fourth quarter to halt an Emery run as the Carbon Lady Dinos secured a 54-45 victory at home Thursday night.

Carbon never trailed in the first meeting this season, jumping out to an early 12-1 lead in the opening quarter. Despite carrying the momentum for most of the game, the Lady Dinos could not completely put Emery away. As the double-digit advantage dropped to six in the final three minutes, Timothy put the game on ice.

“Our team in the past had this mental game where if Emery made runs we would fold, but this team didn’t do that,” said head coach Cami Carlson following the win on KRPX 95.3 The Peak. “We have a deep bench. I’m confident in playing ten different players and that’s awesome. We are lucky that way and we use them all.”

Balance was a huge factor for Carbon throughout the evening. Four starters combined to produce the team’s first 12 points of the game and six different players finished with at least four points.

Timothy scored 12 of her game-high 16 points in the second half to lead Carbon. Fellow junior Madi Orth was a potent second punch as she finished with 12 points, eight of which came in the first 16 minutes. Kennedy Williams and Haley Garish both finished with seven.

Playing from behind the entire game the Emery Lady Spartans refused to quit and had an opportunity to trim Carbon’s lead to one possession with under two minutes to play. Chopping the deficit to five points, the Spartans couldn’t get any closer in the eventual setback.

Karleigh Stilson scored a team-best 13 points, including three makes from the perimeter. While the Emery offensive was slow out of the gate, Stilson scored six of the team’s first seven points to keep within striking distance.

Makaila Peacock also connected on three shots from deep as she poured in 12 points. Alexia Mortensen and Katelyn Nielson each logged seven points in the loss.

Thursday’s win moves Carbon to 12-4 overall and 2-1 in region play. Now ranked No. 4 in the UHSAA RPI, the Dinos will shift their focus to next Thursday, when they will host Richfield in a monumental region clash.

The loss drops Emery to 0-3 in region play and 9-7 overall. Previously ranked No. 9 in the RPI, Emery now sits at No. 10. The season will continue Friday, Jan. 27 at home against the Canyon View Falcons.
