This week’s Carbon School District update shines a spotlight on Castle Heights Elementary and Principal Wendy Fluckey took time to speak over the telephone with Castle Country Radio to discuss testing, counseling recognition, and the archery team.

Mid-year testing has wrapped up and students are just plugging along with their academic studies. “Things are going really well, we’ve hit it hard since coming back from Christmas and we’ve had our mid-year assessments. So that is able to guide the direction of our instruction and our intervention,” stated Principal Fluckey. Students did really well on mid-year testing and will be doing end-of-year testing in a few months. She is very optimistic that the school is on track and will do very well during the end-of-the-year testing.

It’s National School Counseling Week where recognition is given to school counselors. This week there will be several fun activities that will be taking place for all students. “So this is the National School Counseling Week and we are so fortunate to have Amanda Ori at our school full-time, she does a phenomenal job. This week she’s kind of focusing on Career and Technical Education with lessons and we have some fun things going on,” explained Fluckey. Monday was celebrating high school so they wore their Carbon Blue attire, Wednesday is a chance to wear your favorite college apparel, Thursday’s theme is Dream Big so student will be wearing their pajamas, and then on Friday if Future Friday dress up as to what you want to be when you grow up. The activities are just a way to get students excited about their future.

The school’s archery team is busily preparing for the state competition coming up in March thanks to their Coach, Kyle Hansen. “In just about three weeks our team is headed up to Weber to participate in the archery state tournament and it will be held at the Weber County Archery Park,” said Principal Fluckey. The team has done very well when competing in past years and the school hopes they will again have a phenomenal finish to their season. Depending on how they do at the state competition they could go to the National Tournament held in April in Sandy, Utah.

Parent/Teacher Conference will be held on Feb. 15 and Feb. 16 and parents are urged to make appointments with their student’s teacher to see how their student is doing. There will also be a book fair taking place during the conferences where students and parents can browse through the selection of books.
