The Price City Youth Council is a group of teens that form their own city council. They organize various events and activities to entice the youth in the community to participate. Mayor Michael Kourianos stopped by Castle Country Radio to discuss the Price City Youth Council.
“So basically we meet every other Monday, and these are students that have applied to be on the Youth Council and they’re interviewed. The application isn’t you know accepted, they have an interview process and the seniors that are on their way out, interview the applicants and they’re chosen. So it’s great to see that process,” said Mayor Kourianos. The Youth Council has its own mayor, city council members and so on and they elect new leadership each year. The experience of being on the Youth Council is to encourage the youth to give back to the community and the members get a better understanding of their local government.
The Youth Council would not be possible if they didn’t have a great advisor to lead and guide them. “The other part of it is I’ve got to give credit to Terri Tubbs. She has been instrumental for the five years that I have been mayor, she has been right there with the Youth Council and doing the projects. It’s not always easy to be there helping those students with these different projects because of our schedules and different things. But it’s her and I that have really just seen the blessings of those students coming together, working together, and making their ideas and their wishes come to pass,” said Mayor Kourianos. The Youth Council brings a unique perspective on how to interact with the community and they are the voice for the youth in the community.
They organize various events and activities for the citizens of Price, such as dances, spook alleys, and community walks. Their next big event is the annual Price City Youth Council Easter Egg Hunt. “This last Monday we got together as a council, Terri and I, and we talked with our council while they bowled. We took them bowling and had pizza and they got creative, they came up with great ideas to make this Easter Egg Hunt successful. I have to give credit to the past Mayor Ryan Brady, that started this idea. Now we’ve strapped the Youth Council with this because we saw the numbers of youth in the community come from all corners of Price and everywhere for this Easter Egg Hunt,” stated Mayor Kourianos. The annual Price City Youth Council Easter Egg Hunt is scheduled to take place on Saturday, Apr. 1 at Washington Park.
