
The Green River and Pinnacle girl’s basketball teams met for the final time in the regular season on Tuesday night on the Pirates home floor. It is always a competitive game when they get together no matter the sport, but the night would belong to Green River as they earned a 57-44 victory over the Lady Panthers.
Green River holds a 7-16 overall record and a 4-4 mark in region play. They have one contest left, a non-region tilt with DeBeque (10-7, 5-4) out of Colorado. The Lady Pirates suffered an 82-59 loss in their previous game against Whitehorse.
Pinnacle sits at 3-17 overall and 0-7 in region play. They too have one game left on their regular season schedule against fellow Region 23 member Monticello (3-15, 1-6). Pinnacle also was handed a loss in their last game by Whitehorse, 58-13.
The game on Tuesday night started out rather pedestrian with both teams going back-and-forth with each other as Green River went to the locker room up by a score of 28-22.
In the second half, the Lady Panthers came out and put up another nine points in the quarter, but had trouble on defense as the Lady Pirates scored 14 pushing the lead to 42-31, heading into the final eight minutes.
In the fourth, Green River kept their eye on the prize and matched their offensive output from the first quarter with 15, holding Pinnacle to 13 and earning the 57-44 region win.
For Pinnacle it was Averee Atwood scoring 14 points, Persephone Jones added nine and Heather Kerr and Azure Jewkes each scored seven.
Jenilee Keener led all scorers with 20 for the Pirates, Abigail Erwin had 16 and Jordynne Gingerich scored 11 in the win.
Pinnacle’s final game with Monticello will be this Friday as they celebrate “Senior Night”, tip-off is set for 5:30.
Green River will also be at home to face DeBeque on Thursday. Tip-off for the contest will be 5:30.
Monday, the Utah High School Activities Association will release their final RPI rankings and the brackets for the 1A State Championships, which will begin on Feb.25 at home sites, and conclude Mar. 1-4 at the Sevier Valley Center in Richfield.
