Creekview Elementary was highlighted on this week’s Carbon School District weekly update so Principal Keith Palmer stopped by Castle Country Radio to discuss what’s been taking place at the school.
The school is gearing up for several fun activities that will take place for Dr. Seuss week. “The PTA has a lot of things planned, its always a fun week, you know the kids get to dress up, and usually based off of Dr. Seuss books, you know Fox and Socks, and Crazy Socks Day, you know those kinds of things. So that’s always fun. But I think my favorite part is we get police officers, high school and college students, and just other people from the community that come different days and go around to each class to read them books, and that’s always awesome to have other people in the building to see the kids,” said Principal Palmer. There will be several different themed days for students to participate in during the Dr. Seuss week activities.
Next up for the school is their annual Science Fair that is held at the school level. “We don’t send them on, like the older kids to anything, we’re just trying to teach them the basics of science fair. It’s required for all fifth graders, and then some of our other students choose to do it. But we always have a lot of projects and we’re just glad that this year we’re able to bring back the family part of it, we haven’t done it for a few years. But there will be an evening part where the students can bring their parents and let them walk around and see all the projects and things. So that is always exciting, I love when we get families in the school,” stated Principal Palmer. All the judging and awards will be given out during the day by school officials.
The school’s archery team are preparing for their state competition on March 3. “So this is year three for us. We’ve had a change in coaches, our P.E. Coach has taken over the program entirely which has been a good change in some ways. She’s not tied up in meetings like a teacher is, so she can hold practice even on early out and different things. But they’re gearing up, they go to state next Friday on March 3, along with everyone else in the district,” said Principal Palmer. The school is hopeful that the team will do really well up at the state competition.
Principal Palmer, along with five teachers recently attended a National Convention in Indianapolis after being selected by the state for their Title 1 work. “So I got to go out with five of my teachers, we were there from Tuesday, clear to Sunday. But it was great to learn but also to be around those other schools that were doing that, and just to be around each other. It’s different to get out of the school, and get to know each other in that way, but its still about the kids, its from their test performances, and we’re very proud of them, but also the work that the teachers put in. Its nice to be recognized for all the hard work that goes into a school,” said Principal Palmer.
The Dr. Seuss events/activities will be held in the next few weeks and further information will be shared on the school’s Facebook page.
