The Green River Lady Pirates were back on their home floor on Saturday night to face the Water Canyon Wildcats. At the end of the evening the Lady Pirates would punch their ticket to Richfield to continue on in the 1A State Championships with a 54-26 win.

Green River finished the regular season holding the No. 15 in the RPI with a 9-16 overall record and earned a 4-4 mark in Region 23 play.  The Lady Pirates closed out the regular season at home against De Beque, a team out of Colorado,with a 58-34 win.

Water Canyon landed at No. 18, going 1-16 overall with an 0-12 in Region 20. In their final regular season contest, the Wildcats fell to Escalante at home, 47-19.

The game on Saturday night was all Green River, all the time, as they outscored Water Canyon in every quarter. In the first half, it seemed like the Lady Pirates could do no wrong, pushing their way through the first 16 minutes of the contest, taking a 33-8 lead into the locker room at halftime.

In the second half, it was all about maintaining the lead that they had built. Green River perhaps had a little letdown only scoring seven in the third, but came back in the fourth to score 14 sealing the deal and moving on, 54-26.

Abigail Erwin led all scorers with 27 as Jordynne Gingerich scored 13 and Jenilee Keener had 9.

The Lady Pirates will now move on to the second round of play in the 1A State Championships at the Sevier Valley Center on the campus of Snow College Richfield, starting on Wednesday.

Green River will face No. 2 Wendover at 4 p.m.. The Wildcats finished the regular season 17-4 with a 2-0 Region 21 record. Back on Nov. 19 the Lady Pirates and Lady Wildcats faced off in tournament play, with Wendover handing Green River a 68-36 loss.

A loss in this round would mean an end of the season for the Lady Pirates, but a win means they would move into the quarterfinals to face the winner between No. 7 Tabiona and No. 10 Bryce Valley.
