The Green River boys basketball team drew the No. 2 team in the RPI for their second-round match-up in the 1A State Championships in Richfield starting on Wednesday. The Mustangs used a big first half to take the lead and never really looked back handing the Pirates a 75-24 loss.

Green River earned their second-round meeting in a very unorthodox way as their first-round opponent Diamond Ranch had to forfeit the game to the Pirates. Green River finished the regular season 10-14 with the No. 15 spot in the RPI.

In the first quarter, the Mustangs were all over the Pirates putting up 21, while they defensively held Green River to three. That theme would continue in the second quarter as Green River managed just four points while Manila kept it going taking a 42-7 lead into the locker room.

Green River would continue to struggle in the second half managing 17 but giving up 33 and falling to the Mustangs 75-24.

Joe Vollmer put up eight points in the contest with Raul Mendoza adding 6 and Jason Hernandez scoring three.

With the loss. the Pirates fall into the consolation round and will face fellow Region 23 member, the Pinnacle Panthers.

The Panthers fell in their second-round match-up with Wendover 69-39. In both contests this season the Panthers came out on top with the most recent being a memorable double-overtime loss to the Pirates.

The two teams will face off Thursday at 7 at Richfield High School.
