This week’s Carbon School District weekly update shines light on Wellington Elementary. Castle Country Radio was able to sit down with Principal Paulie Vogrinec to discuss what is taking place at the school right now.

“It’s going by fast this year, it’s hard to believe that, like you said, we’re a couple of weeks from the end of third quarter and we have one quarter left, so we’re about down to the last 50 days of school. So we’re like scrambling trying to make sure we’ve done everything we can to make sure our students have been successful this year so it’s a ride right now,” stated Principal Vogrinec. The end of year testing will be quickly be approaching so students are busily working on preparing for those tests. The school hopes to begin end of year testing once students return from the Spring Break holiday.

The weather has been up and down, especially with the cold snowy days we still seem to be seeing in March. This has made it a bit difficult for students to go out to enjoy recess when there are frigid temperatures. “We set our temperature at a certain point. We say if it’s this temperature – we’re out, this temperature we’re in. These poor kids have had more inside days than outside days. We’re liking it to warm up and we’ve had a few days here that have been pretty consistent so the kids have been able to go outside at least during their recesses and get off and burn some of that energy,” said Principal Vogrinec. There have been some teachers that have allowed their students to go into the gym to run around to get the bugs out while being cooped up in the school on the cold snowy days.

The school is busily preparing for upcoming field trips in April and May so a lot of scheduling has been taking place.  “The bus garage, you know we have a shortage in the district for bus drivers. So trying to, if every school wants to go on a field trip and all the spring sports, we’re trying to make sure that we can get everything scheduled on time so our kids can enjoy at least field trips around here and do some activities around our area that will get them ready for that, so they know it’s the end of the year and they get to do a lot of those fun activities,” explained Principal Vogrinec.

Wellington is no different than any other school in the district that have put a huge emphasis on reading this year. They have organized an awesome incentive for students who have met their end of the year reading goal to have an opportunity to buddy/partner read to other students. “It doesn’t matter what grade if you’re a third grader, and you’ve hit that end of year mark for third grade, you might get to go down and be with a kindergartener. So we have at least three to five kids in each classroom in the morning reading with other students. So its just really great to see like lined up in the hallways, kids are up there sitting next to each other, and the little ones are reading to the big ones, it’s a great experience to see it.
