sock-hop

They’re back….the monthly gathering called Helper’s First Friday is set to take place on April 7 at 6:00 pm on the city’s historic Main Street. The theme has been set and this month’s theme is “50s Sock Hop” which will be just that. Castle Country Radio sat down with Event Representative, Becky Driggs to discuss all the details.

Becky Driggs owns Aunt Nells’ Soda Fountain and Gifts in Helper and that is where the idea for a 50s Sock Hop came from. “Aunt Nell was by great-aunt who owned Service Drug in Bountiful, Utah. She had a wonderful store; she was known for her pies and as a teenager I worked there. So when we came to Helper a few years ago and we saw what a beautiful place this was that was my inspiration,” said Driggs. The store offers sweet treats like ice cream, banana splits, shakes, malts and fountain drinks, they even offer sandwiches, hot dogs, and desserts.

“It’s a fifties-themed restaurant so we thought a sock hop was the perfect thing to do. We will be having a costume contest – so get your poodle skirts and your greasers and come for that. We’ll have a twist off, we’re going to be doing that actual sock hop in the bank next door at Driggs Mortgage Team because they have that smooth floor where you can twist and also a bubble gum-blowing contest,” stated Driggs. This evening is for all ages and the entire family is invited to attend.

There will be an opportunity to walk along Helper Historic Main Street to visit the various businesses and art galleries. “Friar Tucks will be giving out pocket combs for the night. KT Gallery will be giving cat-eyed glasses. So all of the other galleries, I believe are going to be open and participating so come and see what Helper has to offer,” said Driggs. The Helper’s First Friday events are a way to bring the community together to enjoy events, activities and music.
