The first RPI rankings for the season were released on Wednesday by the Utah High School Activities Association (UHSAA). The Carbon Dinos entered at No. 5 while the Emery Spartans occupied the No. 9 spot.

North Sanpete grabbed the top spot followed by Grantsville, Canyon View, Morgan and Carbon.

Carbon is sitting at 4-4 right now with a 1-0 record in Region 12 play. Three teams from the division are in the top 10 in 3A. Coming off a 13-0 win over Manti, the Dinos will be back on the field on Wednesday when they welcome Richfield to Price, game time is set for 3:30 p.m..

Emery holds a 6-6 record overall and sits at 2-2 in Region 12 play, coming off of back-to-back losses against No. 3 Canyon View. They will get back to work on Tuesday when Grand comes to town, game time will be 3:30, p.m..

The UHSAA adopted the RPI format in 2019 as a way to rank teams throughout the season and then is used for seeding in the season ending State Playoff Championships.

Rankings will now be updated at the completion of each regular season game leading up to the final week of region play.

The RPI standings are determined by three statistically categories:

*MWP (Modified Winning Percentage): Divide the number of possible points by the number of total available points from games played accounting for the adjustment between classifications.

*OWP (Opponents Winning Percentage): Average of the winning percentage of a team’s opponent.

*OOWP (Opponents’ Opponents Winning Percentage): Same process as OWP except the calculation is with the opponents of the team’s opponent.
