The Carbon Dinos are No. 3, and the Emery Spartans No. 5 in the initial RPI rankings for the 2023 season that were released Thursday by the Utah High School Activities Association. The rankings will be updated following every game and will be used to set playoff seeding at the end of the season. The Juab Wasps landed in the top spot with the Canyon View Falcons taking second.

Carbon is 7-3 overall and 3-0 in region play. The Dinos just suffered a loss against Westlake who is the No. 2 team in 6A, and will get back on the field on Tuesday April 11 when they face No. 2 Canyon View in a region double-header. Four teams from Region 12 reside in the top 10, and the Dinos will face all of them three times in the second half of the regular season.

The Spartans sit at 9-6 overall with a 4-2 region mark. The Spartans are coming off of the three game season sweep of Grand and were able to get one win in the three meetings with Canyon View. They will start back up next week by taking on No. 8 Richfield on the road on Tuesday and then close out the season series with the Wildcats next Friday.

The RPI standings are determined by three statistically categories:

*MWP (Modified Winning Percentage): Divide the number of possible points by the number of total available points from games played accounting for the adjustment between classifications.

*OWP (Opponents Winning Percentage): Average of the winning percentage of a team’s opponent.

*OOWP (Opponents’ Opponents Winning Percentage): Same process as OWP except the calculation is with the opponents of the team’s opponent.
