This week’s Carbon School District weekly update shines a light on Carbon High School. Sterling Scholar Advisor, Lesley Davis and Quiz Bowl Advisor, Lindsey Hansen stopped by Castle Country Radio to share some information about what is taking place at the school.
The Sterling Scholar program is to recognize high school seniors’ academic excellence in schools as Davis explains further, “Sterling Scholars is a way to honor our academic performers at our school. It’s a great program where students get to organize all of the activities they’ve been involved in, in a portfolio that we take to competition. We do have students who do performances like drama, music, dance and they get to take all that to competition.” There are 14 categories and eight schools that compete in the yearly competition.
Carbon High School did really well at the competition this year. “We got eight winners and each of those eight got a $2,500.00 scholarship. There are several schools throughout the state that just competing in the Sterling Scholar, getting nominated for that position, they automatically give money to students,” said Davis. There was a total of 12 students that participated in this year’s competition. Davis has already set her sights on next year’s competition by recruiting incoming Seniors to participate next year.
The school hosts a Quiz Bowl where students compete in a trivia competition. “Our students go head-to-head against other teams in our area like Emery and San Juan and Pinnacle and they’ve done really well. Both of our JV and Varsity teams qualified for nationals this year because they won at various competitions,” stated Hansen. The trivia questions are on various topics. This year they had six Varsity students and four Junior Varsity students that qualified for the national competition that will be held in New Orleans in May.
The students are going to host a fundraising event to help them get to the national competition. “On April 22 at 6:00 pm in the Carbon High Auditorium our Quiz Bowl Team is hosting a Community Trivia Tournament. So it’s going to be Quiz Bowl style, two teams are going to go head-to-head against each other for a round of 20 questions. It’s a single elimination bracket tournament, so once you lose, you’re out. But we are asking for businesses and/or organizations within the community to come and participate,” said Hansen. The team is not asking for a certain amount to participate in the tournament they are just asking for a donation towards their cause. Interested individuals can call Carbon High School at (435) 637-2463 to get signed up for the Community Trivia Tournament.
