The Lady Dinos have put together a very impressive season, perhaps even more impressive is their 7-0 mark in region play. On Tuesday, the Grand County Red Devils came to Price for a double-header. Carbon put together a pair of dominating performances winning game one 17-0 in five innings and game two 17-0 in three.
In the first game, Carbon came out swinging, quite literally, putting up 10 runs in the first two innings. The Dinos added two in the first but them unleashed for eight in the second, scoring in chunks. Makayla Scovill came up with Adri Abeyta and Taylor Secor aboard, Abeyta would score on a wild pitch during the at bat and then Scovill hit a double to center that brought Secor home. A few batters later, and with the score 6-0, Kylan Sorenson stepped up to the plate and smacked a double to left bringing in Haven Byerly and Brielle Sandoval pushing the score to 8-0.
The third inning was a quiet one for the Dinos but in the fourth Gabby Vasquez created some fireworks with a three run shot over the wall in center making the score 13-0. Carbon would go on to add four more runs in the fifth and kept the Red Devils off the board in the bottom portion of the inning ending the contest in five.
Vasquez had a day for the Lady Dinos going 2-3 with five RBI’s and a pair of runs scored. Sorenson was 2-3 collecting a pair of RBI’s and two runs in the win. Sandoval also went 2-3 with two runs scored and one RBI.
On the mound for Carbon was Scovill who gave up just one hit and struck out two.
In game two, it was more of the same from the Dinos this time ending the game in three after a huge second inning where Carbon scored 12 runs.
After putting up five runs in the first, the Lady Dinos took care of the Red Devils 1-2-3 in the top of the second, in the bottom half of the inning, Carbon put up 12 runs putting away Grand for good.
With two outs and Carbon up 9-0, the Lady Dinos would close out the inning scoring eight runs. Grand gave up one run on a walk that scored Sorenson. Vasquez came up to the plate next sending a ground ball to first and would reach on an error that scored Annie McGinnis and Scovill. A Byerly single drove in Jenna Richards. Sorensen came in to get another shot at it and sent a ground ball to left driving in Byerly and Sandoval, the inning would end on an Abeyta grounder to second that brought Reese Ardohain in pushing the score to 17-0. Sorenson came in to pitch in the top of the third and retired the side, ending the game facing just four batters.
Sorenson and Byerly were both 2-2, Sorenson added three RBI’s and a run scored and Byerly had three runs scored and a pair of RBI’s. Sandoval was 2-3 with three RBI’s and three runs scored and Ardohain was 1-1 at the plate scoring three and adding two RBI’s.
Byerly earned the win on the mound going two innings with five strikeouts and Sorensen put in one inning of work striking out three.
Byerly and Scovill are coming on as a lethal 1-2 punch on the mound and it’s not lost on Carbon coach Kirt Nunley who was a guest recently on KOAL’s Drive Time Sports.
“That’s our strong point to be honest with you, our strong point is our pitching, it’s our defense. We haven’t had very many errors this year with our defense, and so when it comes to our pitching I’ve always said this from the beginning, we’re very fortunate, very lucky to have the pitching that we have.” Nunley went on to add,” I’m very fortunate to have four good pitchers. I mean I have Haven, I’ve got Makayla, I’ve got Kylan Sorenson and even Danica Adams, who is a sophomore, so with us having four really good pitchers on our team, it’s going to play a part come state time.”
Carbon has one more region game on their schedule against Richfield on the road on Thursday, after that, one with Juan Diego and one against Union and the regular season will come to a close.
