It’s time for another Price City update and Castle Country Radio was able to sit down with Mayor Michael Kourianos who spoke about a bee project at the high school, indoor swimming pool and Lower Retention Basin project.

Carbon High School recently reached out to the city regarding a bee project that they would like to develop. There is a piece of property the city owns just north of the football field that the school is interested in putting in some bee hives at. “So we said we would talk about it as a council, and last night it was presented to the council. The two students came and made a great presentation, along with Mrs. Pressett and the council approved it. Now we’re writing up a MOU so that both parties, we know exactly what each party has to do for this project. Then we’ll put it before the city council again, approve that MOU and it’s off to the races,” said Mayor Kourianos. The council did have some concerns about the bees being aggressive, as the location of the hives would be near the bike park and skate park but the students assured the council that the bees were not an aggressive species.  Further details about the high school’s bee project will be shared as it becomes available.

This is not the only project the city is working with the high school on, they are also working together to renovate the indoor swimming pool. “A lot of people know that the indoor pool has been closed for quite some time, and we’re hoping that maybe July 1 it will be open. That was a huge partnership with the city and the school district, so that’s another partnership. Its just exciting because we’re providing for our students in the community, you know places to go and things to do,” said Mayor Kourianos. The indoor pool has had a major overhaul and will be better equipped to accommodate the needs of the community.

Recently the city took officials like the BLM, Army Core of Engineers, NRCS, and the EPA around to where the proposed Lower Retention Basin Water Project sites would possible be developed. The EPA stated that it would be beneficial for the city to pipe in their water from the Price River. “So with this project that we are proposing to pipe all of our water systems, 50 percent of Carbon County is already piped so it would be the other 50 percent. I think our citizens in Price see the Price Canal running through the town, that would be piped. We would be able to minimize the ground seepage into homes and different things. There are so many positive things with piping this and so with this study the NRCS is making a proposal, we had to approve it as a council, now the NRCS will run it through its chain of command to get the approval for $964,000.00 to do this study and that’s a two-year study,” stated Mayor Kourianos. The reservoir and piping will all be one project and most of it will be funded by NRCS.
