This is the time that many college students are applying for various scholarships to continue their education. Castle Country Radio was able to sit down with Utah Grazing Improvement Program Director, Troy Forrest to get all the details about the Tate Jensen Memorial Scholarship.
Tate is the son of Butch and Jeanie Jensen and grew up on the Tavaputs Ranch. He was a true cowboy, friend and industry leader. “Tate grew up in that world, has been a cowboy his whole life and graduated high school there in Price, and then went on to go and receive a degree in range management from Utah State University. Felt that was a big part of his education and that made a big impact in his life, and his parents saw that. When his life was unfortunately taken too soon, they wanted to do something to memorialize Tate and his life on the ranch, and they thought one of the best ways they could do that was providing a scholarship,” stated Forrest. Forrest is a member of the Tate Jensen Memorial Scholarship selection committee. The committee will review all the applications in July or August and award the recipient by late August.
There are some applicant qualifications and requirements. “You can do anything Ag related, and especially if you’re going back to a ranch. It also says that you have to be at least going from your junior to your senior year in college or you can be pursuing a Graduate Degree in something Ag related or range related,” said Forrest. The applicants must be studying agriculture or natural resources related field for the purpose of returning to a livestock ranch or be closely involved in managing lands for the ranching industry.
Interested students are urged to submit an essay of no more than 4 pages to apply for this scholarship. “Sit down and write an essay talking about themselves, needs to be 4 pages or less. Talking about how they will use this scholarship to further themselves, and ranching or the ranching community, that’s all there is to it. They send that essay, along with a cover letter if they would like, to Jennie at either her email or through the snail mail – through regular mail. Then, we, as a committee, will take those and go through them, and look at them, and rank them,” explained Forrest. The application/essay are due on for before June 15. Applicants can either email their application/essay to jennie.m.jensen@gmail.com or to Jennie Christensen, PO Box 725, Price UT 84501.
