Each month Castle Country Radio likes to take time to sit down with Carbon County Commissioner, Casey Hopes to discuss what is taking place in the county, and this week’s topic is the flood preparation, SPX GeoTour and art grants.
With this year’s snowpack, we are going to see some water this year which is a nice way to start off the spring/summer season. However, its important that residents prepare for possible flooding as the snow begins to melt. “We’re preparing for the water should it come fast and furious or come down slow and gradual, we’re preparing both ways. I know all the cities have reached out and they’re preparing as well, getting sandbags and getting everything ready. So its quite a blessing to have it warm up a little bit, then cool off again, warm up a little bit, and cool off again. It keeps that snowpack coming, but at slow incremental amounts,” said Commissioner Hopes. Sandbags are available at the county road shed, as well as, at each municipal public works facility.
Carbon County officials are busy preparing for a brand-new adventure experience launching June 3, it’s called the Carbon Corridor’s SPX GeoTour. “Let me talk just real quick first, SPX stands for Stewardship, Preservation and Exploration. So the goal of this is to help people get out and explore, and enjoy what we have out here in our community and surrounding areas like Nine Mile but do it in a responsible and respectful way. This will have a GEO merit badge associated with it. We have 35 cashes that are going to be hid throughout the entire county from Nine Mile all the way out to all the reaches, I’m not even sure where they are all at. But they’re going to be hidden all over the community to help people get out and explore some of those hidden treasures in our community,” stated Commissioner Hopes. Carbon County will host a SPX GeoTour Launch Party from 9:00 am to 11:00 am on Saturday, June 3 at the USU Eastern Prehistoric Museum and everyone is invited to attend.
So the Tourism Tax Advisory gets money from the tax on both restaurants and hotels, this year they decided to make some community improvements with some of that money. “This year we awarded five different applicants. Helper City is going to have a statue that’s going to be put next to their bouldering park. Greek Streak is going to have a mural on their south facing wall, it’ll look like Greece. Then Price City the wave pool is going to have a new art installation for the outdoor wave pool. Price City will also next to the library is going to have, kind of in the Peace Gardens, on both walls, one that’s connected to the library, and the other one that is connected to the Prehistoric Museum,” stated Commissioner Hopes. There is one art project that is almost complete and that can be seen at the Business Technical Assistance Center.
The commissioners want community members to know that they have an open-door policy and if you have concerns or questions to please stop by their office at 751 East 100 North or call them at (435) 636-3200.
