
The Lady Dinos season came to an end in Spanish Fork on Friday. Playing their first game in the Championship flight of the bracket, the Dinos faced the No. 1 Grantsville Cowboys coming close but falling 4-3 and dropping them into the one-loss bracket. In the second game of the day, they faced No. 5 Providence Hall closing out that game in six innings 13-3. In the third game, they squared off again with Manti, battling till the very end but taking a 12-10 loss, ending their season.
Carbon earned their date with the No. 1 Grantsville Cowboys on Friday morning by taking care of business against the Manti Templars on Thursday.
The game started out with Grantsville taking a 3-0 lead in the first three innings.
At the top of the fourth, the Lady Dinos found their offense, when Adri Abeyta sent a double to center field, scoring Reese Ardohain and Kylan Sorenson to move the score to 3-3, Carbon was unable to score again and then the Cowboys put up one more run in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead, handing the Dinos their first loss of the playoffs.
Abeyta was 1-3 from the plate with a pair of RBI’s. Sorenson was also 1-3 with an RBI and a run scored and Haven Byerly had a run scored.
Byerly got the start for the Dinos going 4.2 innings giving up four hits, two earned runs, and striking out six. Makayla Scovill went 1.1 giving up a hit.
After a quick turnaround, the Lady Dinos were back on the field to take on No.5 Providence Hall. After the loss to Grantsville, Carbon had no more room for error.
The Lady Dinos took it seriously putting up seven runs in the first inning. With the score at 2-0, Byerly came up to the plate for a single shot over the center field fence to push it to 3-0. A Taylor Secor double and a Scovill single pushed the score to 7-0 a the end of one.
Gabby Vasquez homered in the fourth bringing in Jenna Richards to push the score to 10-3, and Scovill added a solo shot in the sixth to push the score to 11-3. Brielle Sandoval came up with one out and two on and sent a fly ball that would drop in right field bringing around Sam Riddle and Byerly, putting the Dinos up 13-3 and ending the game in six.
Scovill went 3-4 from the plate with a pair of RBI’s and a pair of runs scored. Vasquez was 2-3 with four RBI’s and a run scored and Byerly was also 2-3 with two runs scored and an RBI in the win.
Scovill got the win in the circle for the Dinos giving up 10 hits with three earned runs and struck out three.
The Lady Dinos weren’t done for the day yet, the Manti Templars the No.12 team were next on the agenda. The Dinos had just beaten Manti Thursday night 7-1.
The game with Manti looked like it was over in the first inning when the Templars put up six runs holding the Lady Dinos scoreless in the bottom half of the inning.
Carbon would go on to add two runs in both the second and third, cutting Manti’s lead to 8-4.
In the fourth, with the score now 11-4 for Manti, Carbon rallied, and with the score at 11-5, Vasquez came up to the plate sending a single to right driving in Scovill and Richards.
The Dinos were able to dig deep and found single runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings but the closest they could get was the 12-10 final score.
Vasquez was 3-5 with three RBI’s and a run scored. Sorenson was 2-4 with a pair of RBI’s, Ardohain was 2-3 scoring two runs and collecting one RBI, and Richards was 2-4 with three runs and an RBI.
Byerly got the start and took the loss, giving up four earned runs. Sorenson came in going 2.2 innings surrendering four earned runs on seven hits while striking out four, and Scovill came in to put in four innings of work with one hit, one earned run, and four strikeouts.
The Lady Dinos end the season 18-8 overall with a perfect 8-0 mark in Region 12 play and also end the season in the No. 4 spot in the final RPI.
