Temperatures are warming up and that means its orange cone season. Castle Country Radio was able to catch up with Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) Spokesperson, Kevin Kitchen to talk about the chip seal project from Wellington to Price and some projects along US-6.
The chip seal project from Wellington to Price is underway and folks can expect to have delays along this route. “On Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, we’ll take an interchange at a time and segment of the roadway and we’ll just do that Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays. So we’ll have one interchange closed, not closed but it’ll be flagged at each of those locations one per day. So if that one is being flagged and you want to avoid it, you can take another one,” said Kitchen. The other thing that will be impactful is that they will only have a lane that is being flagged on US-6 going back and forth.
Folks are reminded to watch their speed when traveling through freshly chipped road sections. “Once we’ve got those fresh chips laid this week, we’ve got to reduce our speed in order to stop people from getting windshield cracked and that type of a thing. Then they’ll return the following week, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and they’ll come in with that little seal coat on the top of it, flush coat is what we call it, and you should be pretty good to go then,” said Kitchen. The chip seal project will come from Wellington up to Price to Highway 10/Carbon Avenue.
There is a culvert project that will be taking place along US-6 that could pose some disruptions to traffic along that area. “So we’re installing a new culvert up by Crandall Canyon. There’s been a big reclamation project going on up there to help solve some of the drainage issues resulting from the Bear Fire burn scar. This is collaborating effort between UDOT, the BLM, Natural Resources and the county, so all of us have worked together on this project that solve some issues upstream of these culverts, but then we’re actually going to be placing culverts now in the area of US-6 and so that will affect lane of traffic,” explained Kitchen. Messages will be shared about this project on the overhead boards coming in both directions to the canyon.
