The Pleasant Valley Days committee invites everyone up to Scofield for their annual celebration on Friday, June 30 and Saturday, July 1. Castle Country Radio was able to sit down with Town Clerk, Lorraine Behling to get all the details of the weekend festivities.
This celebration has become a family tradition for decades with events and activities for all ages. “As I understand it, the celebration was organized decades ago by a group of church leaders and they held that event for many years. But then they no longer wanted to or didn’t need to hold the event. The town took over the planning and preparation and we use it as a way of raising money for our town improvements. Pleasant Valley Days celebrations that we hold and the monies that we raise have really helped us maintain and add to, particularly to our park,” said Behling. Scofield is the smallest incorporated town in the state of Utah with 22 full-time residents.
The theme has been set for this year’s celebration, Party in the Park and that’s is exactly what is going to take place for the weekend. Things kick off in the park at 12:00 pm with all the vendors and booths set up in the park. Folks can enjoy a Dutch Oven Dinner at 5:00 pm in the park for an affordable price. “Then we will be having a Dutch Oven Dinner by Cow Camp Catering at 5:00 pm. Now I’m just really excited about the meal Brittany, the owner of the company has planned. She and her crew are going to be cooking up some pulled pork, Dutch Oven chicken, with cheesy potatoes, and corn on the cob. She’s added a scone with honey butter, and then to top it all off, she’s offering a cherry or peach cobbler with ice cream for dessert, and then she’s also creating some homemade root beer and strawberry lemonade,” explained Behling. The cost to enjoy the Dutch Oven Dinner is $17.00. Following the dinner in the park there will be music and dancing taking place at the park pavilion till 10:00 pm.
Saturday kicks off bright and early as there be a 5K walk/run event kicking off at 6:30 am near the Clear Creek area and this is followed by breakfast in the park at 7:00 am till 10:00 am. The annual parade will start at 11:00 am with an exciting group presenting the flag this year, as Behling explains, “What we’re really excited about this year is we’ve got the Utah National Guard providing the Color Guard and leading out our parade this year. So I think that is going to be a really nice touch and a great way to start it. Then we always get great entries, it’s just a fun parade.” After the parade the vendors and booths will be ready for folks to come back to the park for fun and food.
That evening there will be another night of music and dancing from 8:00 pm to midnight at the park and closing out the night will be a fireworks show over the lake. “I am really excited, we’ve added a few more fireworks, we’ve looked into our budget and added a few more fireworks for that. I know there’s been a couple of problems occasionally with them starting early but we got it lined up to where they will not start before 10:00 pm this year. You know I really love seeing the reflection of those fireworks in the water and hearing those booms echo around the valley I think that’s just a great save for the fireworks,” stated Behling. Guests are invited to watch from the park while listening to the music or they may find a safe place around the lake to enjoy the show.
