Each month Castle Country Radio likes to take time to sit down with Carbon County Commissioner, Casey Hopes to discuss what is taking place in the county, and this week’s topic is the county fair, visitor center and new intersection in Westwood.

The county is excited to be hosting the county fair on August 10 through August 12. It has been missing from events for the last few years, but this year some county employees got together to take the reins to organize the events for the fair this year. “Yea, we’re really appreciative of the employees, they do such a great job, and these ones specifically have a desire to keep the county fair going in Carbon County. They’ve put in all the work and effort into it. It’s a good thing for the community to be able to showcase what we have here in the community and the efforts that people put in to produce and do things in our community,” explained Commissioner Hopes. There will be so many events and activities scheduled for the two days that community members will be able to enjoy at the fairground facility.

Tourism has been in full swing this summer with visitors from all over the country. One particular agency that all visitors should stop by is the new Visitor Center that is now located inside the USU Eastern Prehistoric Museum.  “Our Visitor Center moved out of the County Building several months ago and is back in USU Eastern’s museum and we’ve got a great partnership with them. They’re providing staff there to educate people when they come there. We have a digital kiosk so that people can view different parts of the county, and it comes with a QR Code. So if they want to go down to Nine Mile, they can download, it will pop up the QR Code for Nine Mile and you can download the digital map, drive down Nine Mile off of GPS and it will tell you when to stop, what you’re looking at, kind of give you a description of what you’re seeing throughout the canyon, and some history. It’s really an awesome tool,” stated Commissioner Hopes. The relocation of the Visitor Center will now better accommodate all visitors coming through our area.

The intersection in Westwood has undergone some changes and its important that those traveling through that area know that intersection has been revamped.  “There were some safety concerns there at that intersection, where the new Pain Clinic is going to go. So our road shop and our engineers did a fantastic job. It put all the traffic coming on to Westwood Boulevard coming in at a 90 degree. Before, depending on which way you were coming from, you really had to crank your neck around, to try and view traffic coming, and sometime you missed it, sometimes you got it right. But this puts you at a 90 degree, like any other normal intersection, and yea, you have to take a left, you can’t just shoot through that intersection but it’s a whole lot safer now and it makes a lot of sense,” said Commissioner Hopes.

The commissioners want community members to know that they have an open-door policy and if you have concerns or questions to please stop by their office at 751 East 100 North or call them at (435) 636-3200.
