Castle Country Radio recently held their annual Pie Auction in June and raised funds to help with $100.00 fuel cards for cancer patients and with the Thomas B Anderson scholarship. This year the event raised over $20,000.00 and a portion of the funds was given to Active Re-Entry’s PERKIE Travels program.

“Every year we hold our Pie Auction the third Wednesday of June and this year we had a record-breaking year. We raised over $20,000.00 from community members here in Castle Valley area of making pies, donating pies, donating gifts and merchandise to go with pies, and then of course those who bid on them and purchased pies. So from that money, we do, what Dave said, $100.00 fuel cards. We also do a $2,500.00 Thomas B. Anderson college scholarship and we also would like to donate $5,000.00 of that money to PERKIE Travels for this year,” said Castle Country Radio’s Office Manager, Ann Anderson. A check was presented to Active Re-Entry Director, Terri Yelonek and PERKIE Travel Program Coordinator, Derek Jensen on July 28 at Castle Country Radio on Carbonville Road.

PERKIE Travels Program is a daily transportation service for cancer patients from Carbon & Emery Counties traveling to Utah County for radiation treatments. “So we do transportation for radiation patients up north. We go to Timpanogos, Utah Valley Hospital, and Revere Health. We go five days a week. We have good relationships with all the hospitals, and so usually when you go up, if you’re doing that sort of thing, they tell you about it, and then they coordinate with us, they give you one of the best times, I think to go do radiation treatment, and you sit back and relax and let us do the driving,” explained Jensen. This is a free daily transportation service through Active Re-Entry. Anyone interested in the PERKIE Travel Program are urged to call Active Re-Entry at (435) 637-4950.

This program would not be possible without the volunteer drivers, as Jensen explains, “Really quick, I just want to give a shout-out to our drivers, Larry, Dean, Al, Dale, those guys are the ones doing all the driving, they are fantastic. My mom helps a lot, Gina – those guys are the unsung heroes, they do such fantastic work for us. If you see them, you’re going to see my face a few times but you’re going to see them a whole heck of a lot more, so they are great guys.”
