catfish-on-the-green

The Third Annual Catfish on the Green Fishing Tournament will take place on August 11 and August 12 in Green River.  Event Representative, Amanda Leonard took time to visit with Castle Country Radio to discuss all the details of the competition.

“So this is born from the Emery County Travel Bureau’s efforts on bringing more events to Green River. Looking at what they had and what can attract people and night fishing for catfish is always something that my friends and family have talked about and done. So that is kind of where the idea came from, is let’s see if we can turn this into a fun tournament with the support of the Travel Bureau and bring some people into Green River for the weekend,” explained Leonard. The deadline to receive an event pullover was July 31, but if you sign up now you can receive an event hat.

There are three categories you can sign up for individual, team and youth (12 and under). Fishermen can register up until tournament time on Friday and the cost is $50.00 for 13 and up and $35.00 for 12 and under. “Everything that comes in as far as registration fees and event sponsors goes right back out. That’s in the form of the cash prizes that we give out which is always a couple thousand dollars. Then we do a big drawing that is free, every participant gets one ticket, they can’t purchase more for that drawing and we buy all the prizes here in Emery County and locally. So right now, the catfish for this year is over $5,000.00 that will go back to the participants in cash and prizes,” stated Leonard. This tournament is quickly becoming an annual tradition for fishermen bringing in anglers from all over the area.

The tournament will begin at 5:00 pm on Friday running through the night and ending at noon the following day. You can choose to shorefish or launch a boat. “They can do their boat; they just have to follow all of the state’s fishing proclamation guidelines. So, however, they would normally catch catfish that’s legal, they can do that during the tournament. The boundaries are emailed out to participants, but they’re about 15 miles on each side of Green River City. So it’s pretty open, go camp, go have a good time, but show up by noon sharp on Saturday with your fish,” said Leonard. Measuring will begin at noon and will be measured to the nearest 1/8 inch. If anglers are not in line by noon their fish will be disqualified.
