Carbon High School was highlighted on this week’s Carbon School District weekly update so Principal Jared Hardy stopped by Castle Country Radio to discuss what’s new this year at the high school.
School began on August 16 with a full-day schedule and students are back at it for the 2023 – 2024 school year. “It’s really exciting, you look forward to having a good year and you look forward to having the kids back. Because that is why we got into this business is to be there and help kids, it’s a lot funnier when they are in the building, so we’re excited to get going,” said Principal Hardy. Faculty and staff have been at it for a few weeks preparing for a new school year and are thrilled to finally have students back in the classrooms.
Carbon High has a new attendance policy, so students and parents should become familiar with the new outline. “We have some new aspects to it, like you said, but we’re really trying to go back to holding kids to the same attendance accountability as we did pre-COVID. The changes though are that we want kids in class, and when they’re not in class they can’t get a grade. They need to be in class to learn, that’s what we want for them. We want them to develop those skills and be able to learn because that’s what our purpose is, we want to help them learn and be successful,” said Principal Hardy. The new attendance policy can be found on the Carbon High School website or students can swing by the attendance office to pick up a copy of the policy.
The high school now has a big parking lot to better accommodate students who drive to school. Students are required to obtain a parking pass from the school to be able to park inside the school’s parking lot. “We’re just asking that students who drive to come into the office fill out a paper that has your name, your license plate number. If you possibly drive multiple cars, you can sign up multiple cars and we give you a little window hanger, its free. You just put it in your window, and there’s a number on it that’s equated to your name and that way its just easier to track in the parking lot. If something needs to be moved or if there’s an emergency or anything. We do ask that if you lose it and you need a replacement, that you pay for the replacement, but the initial one is free,” said Principal Hardy. If a student has not completed a parking pass form, they may do so in the school’s office.
There is still some construction taking place in the science rooms so students will have their classes in another part of the school while they wait for the construction to be completed. “So our four science labs are being completely redone. It’s really exciting when they’re all done, they’ll have brand-new equipment and brand-new classrooms. So to start the year, our science lab classrooms will be located in just different areas, and we’ll have signs on the doors to where to go for those classes. But hopefully, by November/December those rooms are done, and we’re able to move back in there, and have some great, brand new, science classrooms to be able to do a lot of cool, cool experiments,” stated Principal Hardy.
