This week’s Carbon School District update shines a spotlight on Castle Heights Elementary and Principal Wendy Fluckey took time to speak over the telephone with Castle Country Radio to discuss attendance, reading goals and upcoming events.
This year’s focus is going to be on attendance so school officials have developed a new program called Build a Knight. “This year school wide we’re implementing the Build a Knight attendance program. What that is, is each classroom receives a cutout of a knight with twelve pieces, and each day they have a 100 percent attendance in their class they get to add a piece to the knight. Once all twelve pieces are achieved then they earn a reward activity in the classroom. So we’re hoping to use that to encourage students to attend and also to promote teamwork within each grade level,” said Principal Fluckey. School officials hope that this will be a fun incentive for students to attend school regularly.
Reading is another focus again this year and the school is hoping for improvements as the year progresses. “We’re very excited with our reading, we are making gains. Last year we set the goal to be 71 percent proficient by the end of the year. With our Dibbles data we started the year off at 60 percent and we did meet our goal of 71 percent. So we’re excited to see that growth and we’re setting new goals for this year and we’ll continue to move forward,” said Principal Fluckey. The goal has been set for this year and school officials will work hard with students to strengthen their reading skills.
Faculty and staff at the school are looking forward to a great school year and the upcoming school activities. “You know we’re just trying to get into school. I know we have our school community council elections coming up in September. We do have a current president and vice-president but we are looking for a secretary. Then of course in October we have our parent/teacher conferences coming up, then we have our Halloween celebrations, so we’ve got lots of fun things planned,” said Principal Fluckey.
