This week’s Carbon School District update shines a spotlight on Helper Middle School. This year the school is under the direction of a new Principal, Nikki Vasquez. Castle Country Radio sat down with the new principal to discuss what is taking place at the school.
Principal Vasquez is no stranger to Helper Middle School as she has worked there many years as the school’s counselor. She explains how it’s help her to transition into her new position, “Being in school counseling you kind of have an admin feel to the job and so I feel like I’ve kind of been in training for the last eight years, so I feel it was a natural transition.” She is excited to be at Helper Middle School and is looking forward to taking the helm as the new Principal.
Students are busily getting into the groove of things and the school year is off to a great start. “Things are great, kids are awesome. We had a wonderful back to school day, we had a pep rally, all sorts of just fun stuff and activities. We’re really trying to focus on relationships and culture building this year, in addition to our reading,” said Principal Vasquez. School officials are excited on what the focus will be this year.
The students will have their annual color dance this Friday and they are very excited about this event. “This Friday we are going to do a color dance and we’ve been doing it for several years. Basically, we take the colored chalk and throw the kids out on the field. Every kid will get two bags for free, and then it’s a $1.00 after that and they just go hog wild. We have our music playing, we have water on the fields for them because we’ve learned in years past, they need that and we just let them have a lot of fun,” said Principal Vasquez.
Next week is Carbon High’s homecoming festivities and Helper Middle School is excited to be a part of the parade on Friday. “We’re going to bus our students, the rest of the student body down to help support that. The rest of the student body will come back but our football and cheerleaders will head on to Carbon High School and they will face Mont Harmon in a game on Carbon High’s field as a homecoming teaser. So it’ll be a lot of fun, its the first time we are doing it, we’re trying something new and just trying to support the entire community,” stated Principal Vasquez.
