The Third Annual Ferron Stake Emergency Preparedness Fair is scheduled to take place on Saturday, September 16 from 9:00 am to 12:30 pm at the Ferron Stake Center on 555 South 440 West in Ferron, Utah. Castle Country Radio was able to sit down with Event Representative, Emily Neilson to discuss all the details.
This workshop is a new event that was established just a few years ago by Neilson. She explains how the concept came to light here in the Emery County area, “We moved here from Vegas 14 years ago and in Vegas they always had Emergency Preparedness Fairs and I wanted to bring it to our community because there wasn’t one. So I kept on asking, can we have one, can we have one and they put me in charge as the Event Representative and here I am three years later.” This is a free event opened to all community members who would like to learn more about emergency planning.
There will be several different workshops being offered so people will have a variety of topics to choose from. “At 9:30 am we have three different classes. One is Create Your Own Pharmacy by Liz Unsworth from Huntington. She will show you how to make herbs and teas from using plants around your yard. We have Eric Anderson from the Southeast Utah Health Department; he’ll speak on Medical Readiness. Christine Jensen from USU Extension Services is going to have a class on Estate Planning,” said Neilson. There will also be courses on Survival Gardening, Storing & Saving Seeds, Disaster Psychology and Freezer Meals Made Easy.
Not only will participants be able to sit in on workshops but they will also have the opportunity to hear from Utah’s “Earthquake Lady,” Maralin Hoff with Be Ready Utah. “At 11:00 am to 12:00 pm is our Keynote Speaker, Maralin Hoff, she is Utah’s Earthquake Lady and she’s from the Be Ready Utah organization. She will be having us learn on how to pack your emergency kit and what to put in it, not only for yourself but also for your pets,” said Neilson. There will also be live demonstrations, swag, opportunity drawings, door prizes and a free lunch sponsored by Castleview Hospital.
