USU Extension-Carbon County is gearing up to host a new 4-H club called Girls Who Code Club which will start September 26. Castle Country Radio was able to sit down with Assistant Professor in Family and Consumer Sciences, Christina Pay to get all the details.

“The Girls Who Code Club is a national movement, actually its international, it was started by a woman in New York who had visited schools and noticed the lack of girls involved in STEM and science. In 1995, 37 percent of women were scientists, and then today there’s 24 percent. So she saw that there was a real need to kind of hook these girls, get them interested in science, and become scientists. So she created this Girls Who Code,” explained Pay. This course provides curriculum and materials to open the door to basic coding. Although, the club is titled Girls Who Code, it is open to both girls and boys, ages 5th grade to 12th grade. The course starts September 26 running through till December and the cost to participate is a 4-H membership fee of $5.00, plus a course fee of $20.00.

The Cloverbuds program is set to begin on September 19. “Yea, 4-H Cloverbuds is for youth who are in kindergarten through second grade. It’s kind of the introduction to
4-H. They have a lot of fun, they have two activities per month and they’re all hands-on, very interactive activities that they get to participate in with kids their own age, its just a lot of fun,” stated Pay. There is a $5.00 membership fee, plus a yearly activity fee of $15.00. Castleview Hospital is a huge sponsor of the Cloverbuds Program as it believes in youth development.

Mark your calendars for the return of Quick & Easy Cooking courses which are set to begin on October 18 at 7:00 pm. “October 18 is actually our first date. These are classes for adults, this is not 4-H its an extension. Quick & Easy is a lot of fun, we’re going to teach you how to make an entrée or main meal for your families, that is inexpensive, nutritious and just can be done quickly,” said Pay. Further details will be shared as the event gets closer.
