Creekview Elementary was highlighted on this week’s Carbon School District weekly update so Principal Keith Palmer stopped by Castle Country Radio to discuss what’s been taking place at the school.

Creekview Elementary was one of the schools this summer that offered Summer School to its students. “We had about 50 register it wasn’t as big as the first time, two years ago, but it was still a good turn out and had a lot of kids who benefitted from that. I know progress is a tough word but what we see is not as much of the summer slide that they seem to at least maintain so we can keep moving forward once we get into the school year. That’s great for those kids who need a little extra help to not fall back and do it all over again,” said Principal Palmer. The students that attended Summer School this year found that they could overcome summer learning loss.

This year there is emphasize on Dreaming Big, as Principal Palmer explains, “So yea we’ve been teaching the kids a lot, and talking to them a lot about Dreaming Big. We want them to know that, really shoot for the stars, and sometimes our dreams change but we should always be dreaming.” The school had an assembly where the teachers dressed up like what occupation they dreamed of when they were the students age.  The students really enjoyed the assembly and it opened their eyes to various careers.

Reading and making connections with the adults at the school will be the focus again this year. “We didn’t add anything new and we’ve made a few little tweaks to things that we are doing to try to always get better but we’re still focusing on reading, and we’re still focusing on trying to make sure every student has a connection with some adult in the building. So we do a lot of things that we do to teach them about us, and we learn about them. Try to help them see that we do have things in common, and that they have someone to turn to,” said Principal Palmer. This creates greater student comfort and makes it so students are willing to be intellectually challenged. Plus, it forms better communication between students and teachers.

Although, it seems that school just started its time to talk mid-term. “So we have Parent/Teacher conference next Tuesday and Wednesday evening. So parents should be seeing a sign-up coming out later today, where they can pick their own time. We look forward to seeing all of the parents of our students next week and that’s always an important thing for them to understand where their student is and what we can do to help them together,” said Principal Palmer.
