The Carbon School District update took time to shine a spotlight on Sally Mauro Elementary this week and Castle Country Radio was able to speak with Principal, Blake Allen to see how things are going so far this school year.
The school is finishing up some beginning of the school year testing and have noticed that students who attended summer school are doing great on testing. “We’re seeing that the students aren’t losing that, like the summer slide, they’re dropping reading levels, stuff like that. So we’re seeing good things with the summer school program,” stated Principal Allen. Parents should also be aware that information on mid-term parent/teacher conferences will be coming home with students this week. Those conferences can be scheduled for either September 27 and September 28.
Interventions class recently started and is a great opportunity for students to strengthen their academic skills. “Interventions are where teachers, aides, and the staff, they’re filling the holes of the student. They see where the students need to be and if students are a little low or higher, if they already know the information then they go to an extension. So that’s something that we try to fill the holes that the students have so that the students can gain mastery of all the content,” said Principal Allen. This concept will help students to stay on track when it comes to their academic learning.
The Toro Ticket program is being given out again this year to outstanding students. Teachers hand out three to five tickets a day to students who show good behavior or set a good example for their peers. “I always like to tell the teachers to look for the little things because sometimes some days its for all kids and I think for adults, it’s hard for us to be positive and have that attitude that we should. So look for the little things in kids because if we keep encouraging that, and recognizing all the little things in the students then you know they are going to continue to do that behavior,” said Principal Allen. Toro Tickets are a good incentive for students to do their best in all areas of school.
A theme has been set this year for the students, faculty and staff called Chase 100. This idea came to Principal Allen after some summer reading of a book that talked about striving for hundred percent of your full potential. “Sometimes you’re not going to hit that hundred mark, and a lot of times we’re not going to hit that hundred mark, its just the reality of life. But the thing is if we are always trying to catch that hundred, we’re always chasing it, then we’re going to keep growing, we’re going to keep progressing, the students are going to learn more,” said Principal Allen. He was so moved by the Chase 100 concept that he shared the book with all of the teachers.
