The Emery Lady Spartans tennis club began tournament play on Saturday in Mount Pleasant at North Sanpete High School for the opening round of the State Tennis Championships. The finals are set to take place in Salt Lake City at Liberty Park this Friday and Saturday.

First singles player Brooklynn Ekker, second singles Cheyenne Bingham and the first doubles team of Acelyn Migliori and Tailynn Minchey all advanced to the next round.

Ekker took on Adilynn Kjar of Gunnison in her opening round match taking the 6-1, 6-1 win. She will face Avery Kaleel of Judge Memorial Catholic High School in the next round.

In her second singles match, Bingham faced Lillian Colasurdo of Providence Hall earning the win 6-1 and 6-1. She takes on Richfield’s Charlotte Poulsen of Richfield on Friday. These two have faced each other three times with Bingham earning her only victory last week at the Region 12 tournament taking the win in three sets 5-7, 6-3, and 6-4.

The first doubles team of Migliori and Minchey earned a bye for the opening round so they will face the Carbon duo of Veronica Cartwright and Lyndie Richardson, they have matched up twice this season with each winning on their home court.

Things will get started on Friday and conclude on Saturday at the tennis complex at Liberty Park.
