With temperatures cooling off its time to start thinking about fuelwood for your stoves and fireplaces. The Forest Service is now selling fuelwood permits now through November 30 for the Manti La Sal National Forest area. Castle Country Radio was able to sit down with Public Service Lead, Andrew Orlemann to talk about the details.
“You can come into any office on the national forest whether in Price or Ephraim or Ferron or down south in Moab and Monticello and we sell fuelwood gathering permits form June 1 through the end of November, November 30,” said Orlemann. Fuelwood permits on the Ferron/Price and Sanpete districts are available at $5.00 per cord. Moab and Monticello fuelwood permits are available at $5.00 per cord for the standard permit. There is a four-cord ($20.00) minimum purchase and a ten-cord maximum per household.
It’s very important for folks to remember that the fuelwood permits are for only the Manti La Sal National Forest areas. “If you come into our office, we’ll give you a map and it shows you the areas you can go, and then the areas that you can not go. You know there’s a lot of private land out there and obviously you can’t go on someone else’s private property to cut,” said Orlemann. A valid permit is required prior to an individual collecting and removing any forest product, including fuelwood, from National Forest System lands.
Christmas tree permits are sold from October through the middle of December and can currently be purchased online. “The website is https://www.recreation.gov/ so right now you can go and buy a permit, go to https://www.recreation.gov/ and you have to search for us for the Manti La Sal and then there’s a little icon there that allows you to purchase a Christmas tree online,” said Orlemann. The offices are hoping to have paper permits available by the beginning of November. The cost for permits is $10.00 per tree with five trees being the maximum amount you can get for the season.
